Relocation Services
When I first started working in the business of providing relocation services, more than twenty five years ago, my first corporate relocation services project was to help a number of families relocating from Europe to across the Atlantic.
The relocating Employees to whom we were providing the relocation services were in fact all new hires. They were grasping the opportunity to start an exciting new life for themselves and their young families in America, one of the greatest countries on earth. In reality, the corporate employer (our client) probably did not need to provide relocation services – at least not a comprehensive package of relocation services. These new Employees would probably have gone anyway. But our client was smart to do so, not least because it created enormous goodwill and loyalty amongst this group of new hires.
I was in the front line, talking with the new hires and their spouses nearly every day in the course of providing them with all the necessary relocation services they required – home sale assistance, immigration support, move-management, even relocation
services at the destination end – such as schooling assistance, temporary accommodations and home purchase assistance.In the weeks and months leading up to their departure from Europe there was, quite naturally, some anxiety about whether they had made the right decision. But their anxiety was considerably lessened because they were being provided with a comprehensive package of personal relocation services locally. The constant communication and support reinforced their decision to take the plunge!
During a personal visit I made to one of these new hires, he made a point of saying to me:
“I want you to know that it speaks volumes to me about my new Employer that they are providing me and my family with these relocation services – The fact that they are using Saunders 1865 really makes me feel I’m important to them and highly valued by them.”
His statement made a major impression on me. He and most of the rest of the group stayed with the same corporate employer for many years after that and they all made valuable contributions to the company’s bottom-line.
The cost of providing the relocation services was tiny in comparison. Yet companies today still make the false economy of providing their employees and new hires with very little in the way of relocation services; some provide very slender support or they go with cheap providers who can give very little personal attention. This defeats the object of providing relocation services!
