EMPLOYERS RELOCATING PEOPLE TO THE UK: don’t let this happen to your Employees!
BBC this week reported yet another scam which cost the victims around £30,000 plus. A tenant, pretending to be a landlord, advertised a London flat on the Gumtree website at a low rent. About
30 different people contracted to move in to the same shared accommodation on the same day and separately paid the pretender upfront rent/deposits of around £1,000 each. He absconded with the funds and they all had no place to live!
This is why it is vital to make sure that your people only source rental homes via reliable, trusted sources. The best way to do that is to retain the services of a professional relocation firm. But we would say that, wouldn’t I? It’s true though. Even the most reputable rental (letting) agents ONLY represent landlords. Their role does not involve protecting tenants’ interests. Plus, leaving aside the reputable letting agents, there are a lot of other agents that employ aggressive tactics that can bite your Employees.
The UK Government has seen fit to stay clear of regulating agents, so it’s very much a BUYER BEWARE marketplace. Why take this unnecessary risk? End of rant!
